Children’s Services Librarian

The Russell County Public Library is looking for a fulltime Children’s Services Librarian to join our team of passionate and dedicated professionals.

Position Type: Fulltime, 37.5 hours per week

Schedule: Year-round, weekdays, occasional evenings and weekends, emphasis on hours that best serve children and their families

Salary: Librarian-level pay scale of $25,000-$35,000 annually with starting salary dependent on education and experience

Qualifications: Ability to demonstrate skills and qualities desired for the position, minimum 2 years’ experience working in the field of early childhood, and Bachelor’s degree preferred or other equivalent credentials

Responsibilities: The Children’s Services Librarian is responsible for services to children ages birth to 8 and their families.  This position requires a high degree of independent judgment and commitment to an array of tasks.  This is a collaborative position that exists within in a values-driven, forward-thinking environment, emphasizing patron experiences that enrich, inspire, and cultivate curiosity.  The Children’s Services Librarian works with the Library Director and the Programming Department to guide the Library forward into expanded services and innovative programming, both in-house and within the community.  This individual is knowledgeable in children’s literature, recommends high-quality additions to the Library’s collection, and creatively promotes the Library’s resources to target audiences.

Desired Skills and Qualities: The ideal candidate appreciates the weight of this position within our community and accepts the responsibility that comes with being a face of the Library.  The ideal candidate also understands that learning should be fun and that the work itself is the most rewarding aspect of the job.  This individual demonstrates enthusiasm, emotional intelligence, and a collaborative spirit in all the following skills and qualities:

  • Passion for working closely with children and their caregivers with kindness, patience, creativity, confidence, adaptability, and a sense of humor.
  • A commitment to inclusivity and making the children’s library a welcoming and accessible space to patrons of all backgrounds and abilities.
  • Warm and engaged disposition; open-minded and receptive to feedback.
  • Knowledge of the current youth landscape, children’s literature, child development, early literacy best practices, and education standards from pre-K to grade 6.
  • Resourceful and self-directed with the capacity to multitask and prioritize competing demands while remaining calm, positive, and detail oriented.
  • Rigorous standards for personal and professional integrity.
  • Able to work hours that best serve children and their families, including weekdays, occasional evenings and weekends, and during spring, summer, and fall breaks.
