@Your Library April 2016

 The Russell County Public Library always strives to foster an atmosphere of learning in our community which means reaching beyond the walls of our building.

     Library users of all ages are relying on library services in new and innovative ways including the fifth grade class at Jamestown Elementary School.

     JES special education teacher Gina Thornton contacted RCPL for assistance in expanding students’ resources on a historical unit about the Holocaust and Reference Librarian Glenda York was eager to help.

York said while the library had a couple of books on the subject for that age group, more books were purchased to boost the library’s collection and meet the needs of students and teachers.

     “I was really grateful she came to the library,” York said. “We were glad to have the opportunity to help students absorb history.”

     According to Thornton, the books were a hit with her students.

     “The books we borrowed from the Russell County Public Library went well with the novel we were reading and had beautiful illustrations,” Thornton said. “Everyone especially loved the graphic novel.”

JES fifth grade teacher Stephanie Overby said her students have shown interest in wanting to continue the partnership with the library.

     “This has inspired me to contact the library more often throughout the year on different topics,” Overby said.

     York said educators are encouraged to contact the library when library services and resources can be used to enhance the education of local students in areas of mutual interest and benefit.

Reaching more readers

     Outreach Services Coordinator Jesse Murrell, who works to deliver books to library patrons who can’t make it to the library, has been reaching readers across the county through local agencies that house and serve many Russell Countians.

     "2016 has been a busy year so far for our outreach services program. We have been involved with multiple community organizations and agencies including the Adanta Center, the Senior Center, Fair Oaks Nursing Home, the Russell County Detention Center, and now the Russell County Extension Office,” Murrell said. “We've been working together with these groups to help get the word out about the amazing services we offer here at the library. We feel that as a community it's important for people to be aware of the resources that are available to them."

     Murrell said in February the RCPL made a 100-book donation to the Russell County Detention Center.  In March, Murrell made a presentation at the Russell County Senior Citizens Center about the Social Security Administration’s website, as well as use of public computers at the library.

     On April 22, a reading session is planned for Fair Oaks Nursing Home, where Murrell will be reading passages from select books and signing residents up for regular book deliveries.

How can you help?

     As your public library staff works to bring library services to all community members, the RCPL regularly accepts clean and gently used donated books. These donations go toward bolstering our collection or to the semi-annual book sale so that we can raise additional funds for more new books.

     The 2016 Spring Book Sale will be May 2-4 at both library locations.
